    Ultrasonic machining, or strictly speaking the "Ultrasonic vibration machining", is a subtraction manufacturing process that removes material from the surface of a part through high frequency, low amplitude vibrations of a tool against the material surface in the presence of fine abrasive particles. The tool travels vertically or orthogonal to the surface of the part at amplitudes of 0.05 to 0.125 mm (0.002 to 0.005 in.). The fine abrasive grains are mixed with water to form a slurry that is distributed across the part and the tip of the tool. Typical grain sizes of the abrasive material range from 100 to 1000, where smaller grains (higher grain number) produce smoother surface finishes.

     

    Ultrasonic vibration machining is typically used on brittle materials as well as materials with a high hardness due to the micro-cracking mechanics.

    Ultrasonic machining is an easy-to-use technology that allows a mold manufacturer to machine very hard or brittle materials with flexibility and accuracy. Ultrasonic machining centers can perform both conventional and ultrasonic machining operations. By combining these technologies in one machine, the user has the capability to machine across the entire material spectrum.

    Ultrasonic Basics and Benefits
    In ultrasonic machining, an electrical HF-signal is transmitted via induction through a small air gap from a stationary coil located on the spindle to a rotating coil located on the HSK toolholder. The high frequency supplied to the piezo elements of the actuating toolholder generates a corresponding vibration on the tip of the tool between 20 to 50 kHz. The vibration of the tool is combined with a simultaneous rotation up to 42,000 rpm.

    The vibration of an undefined diamond tool causes a significant reduction in process forces resulting in higher material removal rates and less tool wear than conventional methods. Conventional methods would be considered grinding or EDM.

     

    An ultrasound is an acoustic wave (sound) the frequency of which exceeds the perception threshold of the human ear (20 kHz). Depending on its intensity fields of application can be distinguished. The first, of low amplitude, is based on employing the rebound (echo) of the sound as a monitoring system (sonar, ultrasound, etc.). The second uses a sound the intensity of which is so high that it modifies the medium through which it passes (weld, cleaned surface, cutting, polished surface, and so on).
