Description

 

Ultrasonic drug extraction is a technique that uses ultrasonic waves to enhance the extraction of bioactive compounds or drugs from natural sources, such as plants, microorganisms, or tissues. It is highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and widely applied in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and herbal industries.


How It Works

  1. Application of Ultrasonic Waves: High-frequency sound waves (20–40 kHz) are introduced into a solvent containing the raw material (e.g., plant or tissue).

  2. Cavitation: Ultrasonic waves create microbubbles that grow and collapse (a process called cavitation). This generates intense shear forces and localized high pressure and temperature.

  3. Cell Disruption: The cavitation breaks the cell walls of the material, releasing intracellular compounds (e.g., alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes).

  4. Enhanced Solvent Penetration: Ultrasonication improves the mixing of the solvent with the material, enhancing mass transfer and extraction efficiency.
